The Yards is 42-acre development in the heart of the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood in Southeast, DC. The history of the area dates back to 1799 when it was created as an annex for the Washington Navy Yard used for shipbuilding and manufacturing by the US Navy. Positioned along the northern bank of the Anacostia River, the Navy Yard neighborhood is the oldest industrial area in Washington, DC.
The redeveloped Yards is establishing a new standard in design through its adaptive reuse. The geography and architecture play a central role in the branding and character of the community. The Bower, a boutique residential building, achieves authenticity by incorporating design precedents reflective of the historic Yards neighborhood. Respecting the authentic features of the area’s character, materials, colors and textures, the interior architecture integrates modernity with manufacturing elements. Unique design features were implemented to create an industrial chic environment. Challenged with a lobby with limited natural light, a floor-to-ceiling glass panel combined with an illuminated woodland-scene, creates a simulated window into nature spanning the length of the entrance. The technique creates an architecturally interesting design while enhancing the industrial ambiance of the building.
The penthouse lounge is an open loft with expansive windows. A highly reflective screen on adjoining walls enlarges the space. A grand stone-clad fireplace, textured golden ceiling, wood paneled floors, and neutral finishes allow for industrial comforts to continue throughout the amenity areas. Similarly styled furniture further complements the natural aesthetic, while a wraparound terrace offers vibrant Capitol Riverfront views.
